Diplomarbeit: Development of a scanning ion conductance microscope Angesprochene Studienrichtungen Technische Physik (Diplom) Technische Physik (BA) Physikalische Energie- und Messtechnik (MA) Technische Physik (MA) Beschreibung Scanning ion conductance microscopy (SICM) is a type of scanning probe microscopy that allows for the investigation of electrically insulating samples in fluid environments with ultrahigh resolution. The components of the microscope are already here at the institute, and a first setup is up and running. The task of the diploma student is an improvement of the system and the development of the scanning software. Experimental and computer programming skills are needed for this work. The diploma student would be supervised by Univ.Ass. Dr. Ille C. Gebeshuber. Sprachen deutsch, englisch Hauptbetreuung Ao.Univ.Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Mag.rer.nat. Dr.techn. PhD position available at the Institute for Electron Microscopy (FELMI), Graz University of Technology “Quantitative analytical electron microscopy of nanostructures” Electron microscopy has revolutionised our understanding of materials and devices by completing the processing-structure-properties links down to atomistic levels. In our laboratory we are developing advanced electron microscopy methods for the characterisation of nanostructured materials, ceramics, semiconductors and organic devices. The research project will focus on the development of nanoanalytical methods in the transmission electron microscope (TEM) by using high resolution TEM, x-ray spectrometry (EDXS), and electron energy-loss spectrometry (EELS). A particular focus will be laid on high resolution EELS with an advanced monochromated (S)TEM system and sophisticated quantification procedures for x-ray spectrometry of thin films and nanostructures. Qualified candidates should have a strong background in physics, chemistry and materials science. Practical experience in electron microscopy would be greatly appreciated. The salary will be according to the rules of the Austrian Science Fund. The position is limited to three years. Candidates should send their applications, including a curriculum vitae and references to: Ferdinand Hofer (ferdinand.hofer@TUGraz.at), Institute for Electron Microscopy and Fine Structure Research Graz University of Technology Steyrergasse 17 A-8010 Graz, Austria FELMI-ZFE is a centre for advanced electron microscopy in materials science. This leads to a wide range of materials to be investigated especially via electron energy-loss spectrometry (EELS), x-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) and high resolution TEM and STEM methods. For the microscopy work a range of analytical TEM’s is available: FEI Tecnai F20 ST with monochromator, HRGIF, EDXS and a STEM/HAADF unit.
